What is Volleyball
What is Volleyball? Volleyball is a sport where competing teams of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or even 9 players on each side, separated by a net attempt to down the ball on the opponents side of the court. Volleyball rules are often specific to the country, region or age group playing and can be different for beach verses indoor. Today volleyball is the second most popular sport in the world behind soccer based upon active participation weekly. The game was invented in the United States in 1895 and over 1 billion people in the world play the game on a weekly basis.
Generally speaking when a volleyball play begins it proceeds as follows: One team serves, the player will serve the ball over the net, much like a player serve a ball in tennis over the net. There are several types of volleyball serves: they include an under-hand serve, float serve, top-spin serve, round house serve, jump serve and a jump float serve.
In today’s game the most popular serve at the highest level for men’s volleyball is the jump serve. For women’s volleyball the jump float serve is quickly becoming the most popular serve in the women’s game!
“One of our instructors at Volleyball1on1 – Tom Black (LMU Head Women’s Coach) has compiled 1000’s of statistics related to the jump float serve in International as well as NCAA Women’s Division 1 Volleyball. His conclusive results are that the jump float serve is statically the most effective serve in women’s volleyball.”
– Andor Gyulai (Volleyball1on1.com Owner)
Once the ball is over the net from the serve the player on the opposing side will more often than not receive serve by passing the ball. More recently the rules have changed for indoor volleyball where players can now pass the serve with their hands, much more like setting a ball. This rule was only implemented in the USA college game about 15 years ago in order to improve the flow and accessibility of the game! In beach volleyball generally speaking serve reception is never allowed with your hands. If you are looking for some great instructional videos on passing we worked with Logan Tom, arguable one of the best players and passers in the world where she shares tips, drills and secrets on becoming a great passer. Her passing drills are some of the most popular videos on youtube!

After the ball is passed the next step is to set the ball. The goal with the set is to use your hands and push the ball into the air so that you can give your team mate a ball they can spike or hit. Setting is considered by most players one of the hardest things to do consistently and correctly. Click Here – For video instruction and coaching on setting!
In the indoor game the way the ball is set has changed dramatically in the last 20 years. Today’s offense is faster than it was in the past. Additionally the back row attack specifically the “bic set” are a new weapon in every coaches offense. (For those looking to see a fun video with a little history on the bic set go here!
Also worth noting is that setting in beach volleyball is very different than setting in indoor volleyball. In beach volleyball the contact on the ball for the set is often far longer than in indoor volleyball. In beach volleyball the rule are different in that ball set must have limited spin in order to be allowed. For indoor volleyball this is far less the case and rather than looking at the spin what is taken into account for the set is whether the the contact on the ball was clean – one motion verses bad set where the hands do not contact the ball at the same time evenly.
From here the next thing that happens is the player attempts to spike or hit the ball down to the ground on the opponents side of the court. Spiking is considered by many players to be their favorite aspect of the sport. At this stage the opponent comes into play. Now it is there job to stop the ball from contacting the ground by either blocking the ball or digging the ball while playing defense.
We offer some of the best instructional video on spiking on the web. For example Andor Gyulai volleyball spiking video is the mot popular video on YouTube for volleyball spiking. In terms of teaching middle hitters spiking technique Jeff Nygaards video hitting in the Middle are some of the most popular videos in the world. As for learning how to spike in the opposite position or from the back row Mike Diehl is an extremely popular instructor at volleyball1on1.com who can teach you these skills. For players looking to learn from a female instructor Logan Toms videos on how to spike a volleyball are also phenomenal.
Also keep in mind spiking on the beach is very different than spiking indoor. We have some incredible instructors like gold medalist Eric Fonoimoana or Olympian Stein Metzger to you Volleyball Hitting Technique.
In today’s game blocking is the first part of your defense in order to stop your opponents attack or spike. Blocking the ball basically means the players jump in the air pushing their hands and arms in the way in an attempt to stop the opposition from spiking the ball past them. Al Scates perhaps the greatest volleyball coach in NCAA history coined a term “Penetration is the key to life” in order to help players remember to push their hands over the net while blocking. The image to right shows one of volleyball1on1 top blocking instructors Matt Fuerbringer blocking a volleyball. Matt Played Volleyball at Stanford and has over 24 videos teaching blocking for beach volleyball. Matt is considered one of the best blocker in the world on the FIVB, AVP, NVL and Cuervo Beach Volleyball Tours.
If the ball is hit past the block the next volleyball skill to come into play is defense.
Defense or digging is when the players using any means available try to have the ball rebound off their body so that it goes in the air and not towards the ground. In volleyball you can rebound the ball off any part of your body into the air so long as it bounces off you and is not held in a stationary position. In the image to the right you can see top AVP volleyball Player Stein Metzger getting deep into the sand in order to dig the ball.
From here depending on what happens the team with the ball will attempt to set their player and once again spike it onto the opponents portion of the court.
