Hi, I’m Stein Metzger 2004 Olympian, 18 time winner on the AVP and FIVB Beach volleyball tours. Today I am going to talk about beach volleyball and how to use the wind to your advantage. This is something you are going to have to learn if you are transitioning from indoor play, to the beach.
Volleyball, Using the Wind
Every time wind comes into play I want to put myself down wind of the volleyball. Say if the wind is coming from the ocean and someone is serving you the ball, you don’t want to meet the ball where you think it will land because the wind will push the ball slightly over and you would have to reach for it. So remember to gauge how strong and the direction of the wind, and wait for the ball to come to your mid-line.
Setting Using the Wind
When you are receiving a pass try and stay behind the ball because you can then move into the ball. You always want to have the best position when receiving a pass so you can spike the ball down and get the kill.
Hitting Using the Wind
If the set is in the inside, instead of going to it and the ball blowing past me, I’m going to wait for the volleyball. This take a lot of experience and a lot of practice, so don’t just go out and play volleyball when its not windy. Practice in the wind because these tips are very important in beach volleyball.
