Volleyball defense and digging drills for team and individual defense.
The setter is the most important player on the court touching the ball almost twice as much as any other player on the court. This volleyball setter drill helps the setter during a time in practice when not much is going on get better with their hand and footwork technique for setting.
In this video Chris Austin starts by explaining how they run setting drills and clinics. Then the video follows with a progression of the setting drills with a multi-ball stationary drill. The multi-ball stationary drill basically allows the setter to get a feel of just setting, pulling together what they did in drill 1 – where the focus was just hands, and drill 2 – where the focus was just feet. The drill consist of coach tossing 8 balls to the players and the setter setting front or back with an “In system” toss.
In this breakout sessions you will see a great drill that works on middle defense and transition setting. As you can see from this drill allot of attention is paid to developing all players ball control including middles and this falls into Bill Ferguson’ philosophy on coaching volleyball and making sure his team (meaning all players – including middles) develop good ball control. Some of the verbal ques include the “Staggered Step” meaning you have one foot in-front of the other so you can move forward quickly.

Area 1 Defense Volleyball Drill with Bill Ferguson, USC practice during the breakout sessions. Great simple drill that can be used for players of all levels. It basically includes two hit balls, one hit from area 2 and one from area 4. The area 2 ball is the hard cross court hit while the area 4 is hit high at the players head.
Middle Blocker Volleyball Defense Drills for Area 5. As part of Bill Ferguson’s ongoing goals one area he puts particular focus on is team defense and ball control. As a result of this his team has consistently ranked in the top 5 in the MPFS for digs per game.

Hut to Five volleyball drill – Is a drill run early in the season to help middles with their eye sequence and to help them have better technique and make better moves when they block. Additionally it is a great drill for outside hitters to work on attacking as well as for defense to work on defending the outside attack.
