Its a great video as you will notice how Andor communicates with the team and gets them to focus on important points he is trying to work on during the practice. This video is a great demonstration of how coaches can better use the Socratic method of asking open probe questions to get results. Also this will show coaches how to use the end of practice review huddle to help players better prepare individually and as a team for the next practice.
So for the last few years now perhaps the hottest topic in volleyball is the “Read the Game” concept. The idea was brought to light by a few of the best coaches in world including Karch Kiraly, Hugh McCutcheon, Paula Weishoff, Ron Larson and Tom Black. The idea is as follows, top players better see and read what is going to happen giving them a competitive edge as the play unfolds.
In this video Jason Lockhead points out a common mistake most players make with their dominant vs. their non dominant hand when blocking. Its simple to fix and can have a huge impact but players need to be conscious of it and focus on it! In this video Jason also talks about what your hands should be doing up in the air when blocking.
This video features more of Jason Lockhead’s Superman Defense Technique plus insightful ideas to help players with what is the correct mindset when playing beach defense. This video again demonstrates that great teachers / coaches have the ability to simplify the game and focus on the positive things that matter. Jason demonstrates this in this video as he does throughout practice.
This video describes Jason Lockhead Superman Defense Technique. The technique involves you putting your non digging hand in the sand for more control so that you look like superman “Flying Pose” as you fly along the top of the sand. This technique was filmed while during practice while Jason was running a 2 ball beach volleyball defense drill.
I am in South Africa training to hopefully play in the FIVB event in a few weeks. Week 1 – Finished!

he speed of the serve in volleyball for both the jump float and the top spin jump serve has increased to the point that players have between 0.6 – 1.1 second to react from contact from serve to contact when passing on serve receive. Given this speed the need to improve player reaction on serve receive has increased. The split step stretch shortening cycle…

In early 2014 Volleyball1on1 Owner Andor Gyulai filmed a beach volleyball practice with AVP and FIVB player and coach Jason Lockhead. Jason at age 30 is one of the youngest beach volleyball coaches we have ever filmed and also one of the most talented. For the practice we brought in 3 high level USA Beach High Performance players to accompany Andor. 2 Players- Miles Evans and Alex…
As coaches we can be stubborn, we like to run the same rotations in tight situations, we like to rely on the same hitter when we need a quick point, and we tend to stick to a very specific routine. Why? Because it works. Why? Because if it’s not broken why fix it right? Wrong. Which is why our program upgraded it’s process in the film room, all with the help of Krossover.
This is day 2 / practice 2 of volleyball coaching nightmares. In this practice Andor Gyulai takes over practice and tries to teach the coach (Kerri Eich) important volleyball coaching concepts that she can use when coaching the team. Also where needed Andor sets a tone of how practice should be run and how the players should behave.
This post continues with the serving and passing drill on one court with the outsides, opposites and liberos and on the other court the middles and setters continue to work on teaching the middles movement patterns and how to spike successfully out of the middle hitter position. This drill offers a progression for the middles from the previous videos series.
Welcome to volleyball coaching nightmares. This programs follows Andor Gyulai for 1 week as he visit volleyball programs around the world with the goal of turning the program from Volleyball Coaching Nightmare into volleyball coaching dreams. This is the first series of 25 videos from Volleyball Coaching Nightmares at Uni High School in Santa Monica from practice 1. The goal of practice 1 is to observe the current coach (Kerri Eich) run the practice and get an idea of her strengths and weaknesses as a coach.
This series of 3 videos follows 2 drills Andor sets up for the players. The drills divide the outsides and liberos on one court to work on serving and passing while on the other court Andor takes the middles and setters to work of movement patterns. This video series is really basic in nature and is designed for players very new to the game. In this case Uni High has several players that have just started playing volleyball, meaning they have played for a year or two, yet they are extremely athletic. This drill works to teach how to be an effective middle player.
Modified on the net pepper volleyball drill with 3 players is a great multi – skill to follow up 90 passes drill. The drill builds on the work players did to imprint good form in the 90 passes drill and now takes that to a more game like situation on the net. The result is players now work on their passing more like what they will see off a serve receive or a free ball.
The setter is the most important player on the court touching the ball almost twice as much as any other player on the court. This volleyball setter drill helps the setter during a time in practice when not much is going on get better with their hand and footwork technique for setting.
This video features the Volleyball Practice Plan for Day 2 of Volleyball Coaching Nightmares. In the video Andor explains the practice and his thoughts behind the layout, the drills and his goals for the practice. This video features many best practices in setting up a volleyball practice plan. The video also includes easy to use advice on how to move between drills faster and how to make sure practices all season are smoother.
This powerful video is the first video of Andor Gyulai coaching the team on day 2 of practice at Uni high school in Santa Monica. This video features a numbers of extremely valuable takeaways for coaches across all levels including:
The 90 Passes skill building warm up drill is a great drill to teach players concentration, while warming them up focusing on the important skill of passing. What the drill is able to accomplish is a high number of reps (90 For each player) in a really short period of time with very specific focuses, while passing from different points on the volleyball court and onto the net.
This series of 3 videos is a must watch and introduces Andor Gyulai, the Uni High coaching staff and also gives you some information about the players. We feel the coaching situation at the Uni High School volleyball program is similar to many high school volleyball programs around the world. We felt this was…
This series of two videos features Kerri’s team warm up plus her first drill – Overpass hitting drill. This is the first series of videos where we can see Kerri coaching and observe her coaching style and what drills she likes to run and why. Although the drills she runs are not very good in our opinion based upon the skill of the team and what we see as the team goals it is worth watching so that you can later compare what Andor suggest and why by comparison.
This video features the completion of Kerri second volleyball drill plus Kerri explaining to Andor the purpose of the drill and some of the things she is trying to work on. This is revealing as it helps viewers understand her goals and the drills she is choosing based upon those goals.
This video features Kerri third drill – Hitters vs. Defenders, 6 on 6 from day 1. The video features Andor observing the drill and still being pretty hands off. Andor shares some observations regarding the drill as well as what he has see in the practice thus far.
In this video Andor has enough and based upon only being in the gym for 4 days decides to take over the practice and run a new offensive drill. Unfortunately it becomes very clear quickly that the level of drills Kerri was running the team at, did not match their skill level and Andor quickly evaluates this while trying to run this first drill.
Andor has taken over practice and has modified the offense drill he was running into a simple exchange drill based upon the skill and ball control of the players. This series of 3 videos is extremely revealing and shows so many important points with regard to good coaching.
In this video Andor and Kerri discuss and review the practice thus far and some of the things Kerri observed watcing Andor coach as well as some things that Andor observed watching Kerri coach.
