The technique is described as the “Stretch Step Shortening Cycle” and is used to help players load as the ball is contacted so that they are more explosive moving to dig the ball on defense.

Important concepts:
- Shuffle so that you have a good line to the attacker, often based upon their approach angle.
- Stretch Step just before contact
- Be loaded on contact
- Be neutral on contact
- Cross over step for the line or cut so you can travel the largest distance on your first step
