High school volleyball season is brutal in that team matches start just weeks after the first practice. In this article I am going to quickly explore how we work with high school teams and coaches to learn 70-80% of what they need to know before the season begins. (Applies to club too!)
“The Language of Volleyball You Speak In Your Program! Systems, Terms / Concepts, Techniques, Teach Your Players a New Language, Speak It as Your First Language!” – Alan Knipe
The power of good verbal cues in coaching is the ability to communicate complex thoughts and ideas with single words or short phrases. Once you teach your players a concept and then associate the language, the “verbal cue”, going forward this saves you so much time when coaching. Rather than having to explain the complex thought each time and how a player is not doing it correctly, you can just say the “verbal cue” and the player will know exactly what you are talking about.
During the course of our 4 day Volleyball1on1 Summer Camp players and coaches will learn 70-80% of the verbal cues and concepts they need to know during the course of the season. Including:
We start our Volleyball1on1 Summer Camps by building a foundation for learning. We teach players to physically speed up how they learn anything including volleyball. We find this is critical in order to soak up the physical amount of information they learn over the course of 4 days in our Volleyball1on1 Summer Camps.

Next we teach the OODA Loop and how each volleyball skill: serving, passing, spiking, setting, defense and blocking needs to be learned from the foundation of “reading the game.” (See Why Here)
The first volleyball skill we teach is serving. We find it is important to assign a hierarchy in skill importance using science. This create a strong foundation from which to teach different skills that can be used to develop a teams guiding principles.
Going back to: “The Language of Volleyball You Speak In Your Program! Systems, Terms / Concepts, Techniques, Teach Your Players a New Language, Speak It as Your First Language!” – Alan Knipe
We teach about 25-35 verbal cues for each skill. By the end of the 4 days players understand complex thoughts around learning each skill with a simple 2 word verbal cue. For example on serving and spiking: “Hips for Power” – This means create torque by opening your hips in order to generate power.
While we teach each skill and the associate verbal cues, we also teach players our language for volleyball coaching and motor skill learning. The motor skill learning language includes words such as: “Specificity,” “Guided Discovery”, “Blocked vs. Random Practice”.
After we have finished teaching each skill we run our summer camp attendees through a total of 3 full practice plans during the 4 day camp. Again we want your players to speak our language as it relates to practice outline, drills, mini-games, skill building warm-ups, 6 on 6 wash drills and more. Our goal is that you and your players start your first practice using our system, and that practice runs smoothly start to finish without a bunch of explaining why and how to run practice!
I cannot explain how valuable this is! The result is teams get to working on getting better day 1 of practice in a proven system that gets results verse still learning what to do and where to go. (This avoid wasted time due to organizational problems!)
During the course of the 4 days 2 additional fundamental themes are constantly being reviewed in everything we do.
Firstly “It’s bigger than volleyball!” Volleyball and sports is a great tool for teaching young students important life lessons. During the course of 4 days we teach players 15 important life lessons that will better prepare them for the workplace and life after high school.
As John Wooden said: “I am not sure how good they are? Ask me in 30 years.”
These ideas of “It’s bigger than volleyball” are the things your players will remember you for and how you will have the biggest and most profound impact on their lives.
For example, topics include:
- Proven scientific techniques on how to deal with stress and pressure,
- Tips and tools on how to become a better communicator
- How to become more considerate of others
- “Game theory – Tit for tat”
- Life secretes like: “Raising your expectations”
- Competition and how to strive in competition
Secondly we teach players everything they need to know about “teamwork!” The work environment has change, employers want employees who can work and collaborate effectively in a team. No sport is better than volleyball for teaching people how to function successfully in and as a team.
We teach you and your players the most effective and proven business principals and systems for functioning in a team successfully. This is critical for life, but also for your teams volleyball success. Why?
A large number of high school teams seasons fail, not because the team was not good enough, but rather because the players did not feel good together as a team and therefore could not function successfully on the court together as a team.
We also teach you and your players how to be effective leaders in the team.
Finally we offer a complimentary volleyball coaches clinic separate from the players to cover topics you may need help understanding. Great coaches know they do not know it all, and can admit weaknesses. We help you by giving you the tools you need for once you take over yourself and start practice / season.
These clinics are invaluable as it also helps get all your coaches on the same page teaching the same concepts the same way across all teams. We open the clinics up to your local feeder middle school coaches and offer the middle school coaches a light version of our Volleyball1on1 Coaching Manual so that these coaches teach the same concepts as you do and to also help you get better players.
If you are a high school coach or club director with questions on our 4 day camp and how your players and coaches can learn 70-80% of what they need to know before season begins let me know and I will happily schedule a call to review more details with you.
