Area 1 Defense Volleyball Drill with Bill Ferguson, USC practice during the breakout sessions. Great simple drill that can be used for players of all levels. It basically includes two hit balls, one hit from area 2 and one from area 4. The area 2 ball is the hard cross court hit while the area 4 is hit high at the players head.
This drill goes back to Bill’s goals of being great with ball control and defense. The team as you can see from this drill puts a lot of attention on individual and team defense.
Verbal Ques:
- Get balance
- Arms out
- Palms up
- Step to the side where you dig the ball (So you can get your hips behind the ball where possible and bring the ball back to your target)
- Feet slightly staggered (So you can step to the side where the ball is)
The reason for the two consecutive hits is to help with player re-balance and reaction. Note we have also included the “conversation from the office” where Bill and Andor discuss the drill in detail.
