Hi, I’m Stein Metzger 2004 Olympian and formerly one of the funniest guys on the AVP and FIVB tour! 🙂 I say this to make a point about beach volleyball, your partner. I have often been complimented as a fun guy to play with. The reality is when choosing a partner I am deadly serious! There are a lot of factors that go into choosing a partner.
Beach volleyball, your partner
For me, I think the number one thing is how do you side out together? When siding out you need to look at three things.
One, the pass! I generally play with taller players who often are not as good at passing so I really focus on my game to be a great setter to compensate for poor passing.
Two, the set! I am generally not the strongest at siding out, being only 6 foot 4. Some would say that is not short. However I would often have to side out against monsters as tall as 6 foot 9 and 6 foot 10. So I always look for a good setter.
Three, defense! After siding out the next thing you want to consider is your ability to score points by stopping their offense. I generally am a better defender than I am a blocker so I look for taller players that can block so that I focus on my strength which is defense.
These three points are just some of the valuable lessons you will learn in my video below on how to choose a partner!
I hope you enjoy this video and remember, when choosing a partner just because they have a weird name doesn’t mean they suck! Some of my favorite partners with weird names include, Karch, Lambert, Dax, Gibbs, and Wong! 🙂 I told you I am funny.
