In video 4 of beach volleyball passing Steve Anderson talks about “Play on the ball”. This means how do we move and contact the ball.
The first thing to look at when contacting the ball is your platform. Steve discusses some of the more crucial and basic parts to passing / platform including:
- Seeing if your arms can come together by releasing your shoulders
- Making sure your hands are even and together
- Creating some distance from your torso on contact with the pass
- Also being as low as possible
- Being aware of the blind spot as you pass the ball
Once you have a good platform and contact the ball the next step is to follow through and all the way to the target. Also where possible keep the ball trapped between your feet, between your shoulders, essentially somewhere inside your body line, ideally as close to your mid line as possible. Try not to pass the ball outside your body as this makes your passing far less consistent.
Verbal ques include:
- Load
- Lift
- Midline
In cases where the ball does get outside your body line and good tip Steve shares is to raise your outside shoulder and lower your insider shoulder while doing your normal passing platform. This will keep the ball going where you want while not braking your passing form.
