Beyond being used as a better tool for “Reading the Game” and teaching Volleyball Skills more effectively the OODA Loop is a powerful way for players and coaches to approach Volleyball Strategy.
Colonel John Boyd the military strategist who rewrote the book on modern air warfare and the man behind the OODA Loop believed that when at a disadvantage a competent pilot could still overcome that disadvantage by “Attacking the Mind” of his opponent.

I was playing this weekend when my partner posted this video. I thought it displayed several excellent lessons for indoor volleyball setting that I feel the majority of coaches often miss, either because they do not play beach or simply haven’t been exposed to enough beach volleyball. Now, given that setting has been statistically determined…
So as many of you know I still love playing beach volleyball competitively and I wanted to share an important tip that has really helped me as I turn 40 this year to compete against those young bucks. Hopefully it will help you do the same! As an older player I find attacking successfully is one of the most difficult things to do as you get older.
This post contains a 2 part video evaluation of Ryan Doherty blocking verses the great Ricardo and Alison. I love Ryan and what he does for the sport however he is making some major, easy to correct blocking mistakes and it is time to fix them before the Olympics!
This video features the next progression of the practice with a scored game like drill using a 6 foot forward jump serve to start the rally. The result of the tougher serving is more spray passes thus working on some of the new setting techniques the players just worked on in the previous drills.
This video features a continuation and a progression from the previous spray pass drill. Now players not only have to set a bad spray pass, but in some cases the spray pass is so bad they have to set the ball behind themselves. This video also works on player spacing and helps the attacker with where and how to approach a bad pass so they can still maybe be in system or at least get a decent attack in on the bad pass.
This video features the spray pass setting drill and coaching with Anjinho Bacil. A short low pass is a common error when passing the ball infront of your inside leg however at the height Anjinho recommends however practicing this drill results in an easy fix where the setter can improve the play and get the hitter back in system.
This video features the players doing warm up hitting lines with Anjinho Bacil during the beach practice. The players are getting more physically ready for the tougher more intensive drills that include more attacking. What I like about this video is it brings up the important point that the passer / hitter should always pass the ball infront of the setter in beach. On a tough serve / free ball / even warm ups the passer needs to work to get the ball in front of the setter to set up the offense.
In this video Andor and Anjinho review the 4 person cross court pepper beach volleyball drill and each shares their thoughts on the drill.
This video is a continuation and filming from the earlier cross court pepper drill. This drill features allot of verbal cues and coaching on: movement, managing the ball between you and your partner, defense, ball control, setting and more. This 4 person drill is a great warm up beach volleyball drill or drill that can be inserted into any beach volleyball practice to help improve: setting, pulling, defense, movement and player spacing as a team.

This 3rd beach volleyball drill (In Pedro Brazao Practice) is a 2 ball beach volleyball defense drill featuring a line block and angle defense with beach volleyball coach Pedro Brazao attacking from a bench to simulate a real attack. The players play the defense out off the dig but not off the block. The players are now starting to get warm and as a result the playing level in the drills and intensity is increasing.
This is a beach volleyball warm up drill that features 2 balls, that are game like serves, 1 for each player with a line shot after the dig and set. I would like to share an easy to use and easy understand example of how to OODA Loop your opponent using Hick’s law. This example was used on me initially quite effectively by my good friend Colin Pockock (Age 44) in South Africa who is a former beach volleyball Olympian who took a 9th at the 2004 Olympics. I think he is the best beach player in South Africa volleyball history.
