The Instructional Beach Volleyball Passing Videos:
Video 1 – Beach Volleyball Passing Demonstration
In this video correct beach passing technique is demonstrated. Correct form is shown from the back, side and front angles. This video lays the foundation and offers a visual reference for the videos that follow. Volleyball1on1 is also in the process of adding more demo videos. This should follow shortly.
Video 2 – Footwork
In this video Steve introduces the concepts associated with correct footwork when passing. Footwork discussed:
- First Step – Unsettle Step: This step is used to start momentum and get the players moving in the correct direction. This step is initiated once it is determined what direction the serve is going.
- Short Distance – Shuffle Movement Step: This footwork is used to cover short distances.
- Longer Distance – Gallop Movement Step: This footwork is used to cover large distances to the ball. This footwork is more risky due to the cross-over step.
- Both the shuffle and the gallop step take place in groups of two.
Video 3 – Tracking
Steve describes tracking as “Moving in time with the information as you get it!”. In this video Steve talks about how to track the ball more successfully when passing. Steve builds on the concepts taught on footwork in video 2 and now adds movement forward and back. Steve also goes over the unsettle, shuffle and gallop step moving forward and back.
Video 4 – Play On the Ball
In this video Steve talks about a number of important concepts but the point most advanced players understand and use is keeping the ball mid line as much as possible. What this does is allow top players to get aced less often. On tough serves even if the ball is not passed great, the chances of getting aced go down significantly if you can get some part of your body behind it on contact. This results in balls more likely going forward as you can use your body as an anchor as well as absorb impact more effectively. Steve also shares a great tip on using your shoulders for balls played outside your mid line.
Video 5 – Indoor vs. Beach Passing Advice
In this video Steve discusses differences in passing indoor verses passing on the beach. Points discussed include the fact that there are just two passers, one of the passers who does not pass needs to set, the passers chooses where they wish to run their offense, the best place to pass is in front of you preferably in front of your inside the court leg and then run an up and down set.
Video 6 – Recovery
This little spoken about coaching tips that pays huge dividends towards more consistent passing plus staying focused on the task at hand. Recovery consists of three components:
- Follow Through – Final part of contact as you follow through on the pass to your target.
- Finish – Pause at the end of your pass where you wait just slightly on completion.
- Switch Rolls – This is where you mentally and physically switch rolls to the next skill which is likely offense and spiking if you have just passed.
